It took a whole season to fall in love with Tracy and to accept the marriage of Robin and Barney – and a single episode to watch it all collapse. Still, I do appreciate Ted’s endless rehearsals of hope and delusions, the divorce, Robin’s gradual estrangement, and all those sharp, realistic moments that pierce through the show’s (sometimes misplaced) laughter. After nine seasons, the heart of HIMYM lies in how people love, drift, and age –

If Lily and Marshall anchor one end of the intimacy spectrum as the stable and familial, and Barney the other, then Ted and Robin hover restlessly in between, where most of us live. Yet their reunion in the finale shatters the rosy retrospection once pieced together by the blue French horn and rainy streets. In its rush to restore romance, the show betrays the beauty of letting go (as the locket’s story could have told). It thus ends not with love’s triumph, but rather, with its repetition. 但是Barney天降女儿还是不可原谅。
